What is a cookie

A cookie is a small text file stored by your browser when you visit a website. Cookies let sites remember information about your visit — your language, your consent choices, whether you are logged in, and (for advertising partners) an anonymised identifier used to serve relevant ads. Each cookie shown has a name, a value, a domain, an expiration date and a purpose which we document in our consent banner. Cookies set by third-party ad networks appear with those networks’ domains; those cookies are controlled by the respective network under their own terms.

Consent lifecycle

Our consent record retains your choice for 13 months, after which we ask again. This aligns with the guidance issued by the European Data Protection Board and mirrors the industry norm. If you clear your browser cookies, your consent record is also cleared and the banner appears again on your next visit.

Cookies used by embedded content

Some articles embed third-party content such as YouTube video previews, X/Twitter posts, GitHub gists or Reddit threads. These embeds may set their own cookies when they load. To limit that, we lazy-load embeds — they only load when you actively click a placeholder — and we prefer privacy-friendly embed variants where the provider offers one (for example youtube-nocookie.com).

If you would rather not load any third-party embeds at all, you can install a content blocker or use your browser’s built-in tracking protection. Our articles remain fully readable without any embed loaded.
